Weekly Technetic #19: Population
Overpopulation is one of the most enduring and dangerous myths of our time, right up there with global warming and the pandemic of the unvaccinated. In the two centuries since Malthus, we have seen enforced famines, literal genocides, campaigns promoting sterilization and abortion, and many other attempts at defusing the so-called population "bomb" that supposedly waits to devastate our planet and our civilization.
Needless to say, the dire predictions have yet to come true. In fact, even the tamest of these attempts at prophecy have failed miserably. Until 2020, it was clear to see that population growth and well-being were increasing together. Resource shortages are, for the most part, because of logistics and politics rather than any sort of actual lack of material. The free market has an amazing power to work around that, balancing prices based on demand, while the march of progress creates new ways of producing those same resources affordably.
Make no mistake. Those resources belong to us, to humanity. They're part of our inheritance. The overpopulation myth argues that we should save them for future generations. On the surface, this is a good idea—only as long as it doesn't diminish our lives, of course—but such advice rings hollow when you realize that the people preaching it are the same ones who are taking action to ensure that, at some point in the near future, there won't be a next generation.
That is what makes their fantasy a danger to all of humanity. It may seem ludicrous on the face of it. After all, there are over seven billion people on this planet right now. Killing them all would take forever, right? Yet the pieces are already in place. Fertility rates are dropping all throughout the Western world. Over a billion human beings were forced or coerced into being injected with an untested genetic therapy, and miscarriages suddenly skyrocketed. Sterilizing surgeries and drugs are being pushed on children in schools. Antinatalism, which should be nothing more than a fringe belief restricted to apocalyptic cults, has instead become a rallying cry of the government-led cult of Scientism.
In such a hostile world, what can we do as technetics? We're pressured from all sides to reject our birthright, our one true biological purpose. In a great many cases, including my own, we're prevented from serving that purpose until it's almost too late. No wonder depression has risen to levels never before seen. Whether they understand it or not, people can feel that emptiness in their lives, the lack that comes from ignoring the very basis of life itself.
Wise counsel can always help. Talk to those who are considering an abortion or transition, or even a vasectomy. As a friend, not an enemy, show them your belief that they are giving up something wonderful, indeed spiritual: the chance to create new life.
Displaying your love of humanity to others is another step forward. We can get involved in our communities to promote healthy attitudes toward children and the family. We can encourage adoption, reestablish the notions of the extended family and babysitting jobs. Anything that relieves the pressure which causes so many men and women to decide that extending their line isn't worth it.
Most importantly, we must help ourselves, so that we can ensure that the next generation not only survives, but thrives. If you already have children, treat them well. Teach them well. Fight against the forces that would corrupt their minds and bodies. If you have not yet performed that sacred and purposeful act, know that the path to eudaemonia is one that can be walked by the childless, but not by the "child-free".
